As a response to that artists have engaged in narratives that underline the problems brought about by social inequality, the colonial past of the Americas and the aggravation of all problems derived from the capitalist system. This series began as a response to the rise of ultra-right wing movements in the world and mainly in Brazil. Similarly to the US, the political opinion of Brazilians is being informed by a deluge of memes and fake news distributed through Whatsapp, the messaging app owned by Facebook. Lacking information, a large share of the population cannot discern truth from lies. Fiction intersperses with reality and truth and lies cannot be told apart. It&nbsp; inhabits the now, but the long duration now that encompasses the birth of capitalism and visualizes the chaotic future with screaming colors and impulsive forms,&nbsp; as an instance of https://dulphe.com/Pendulum Wed, 21 Jun 2017 14:34:20 +0000 Dulphe Pinheiro-Machado https://dulphe.com/Pendulum PendulumI make videos, photographs and installations inspired by the moment when children come into cognition. I draw inspiration from cinema, assimilating techniques from the medium. In this process of describing how we acquire language, I encountered an emotional narrative that is built with recurrent images and objects that activate memories. I make paper objects from photographs to use them as elements in videos. I project strangeness onto them. They are distortions of reality, what I apprehend as an emotional world. I use simple elements like fruits to build a vocabulary of states of mind. I capture what I call emotional perspective, when what we perceive is distorted by our feelings. The images I produce are containers for an emotional vocabulary. It is the result of the LABMIS Artistic Residency at the Museum of Image and Sound of São Paulo. It consists of a ten-hour movie in which a series of questions were performed repeatedly with the interviewees until exhaustion. The architecture of our everyday is nothing short of epic. Our horizon as well as individual icons are harnessed to express the frenetic, symmetrical and assymetrical beauty of this unique city. A kaleidoscope of manmade wonder, finally at the appropriate scale for NYC. From the brown housing blocks to the gilded Woolworth, from the refined brownstone to the industrial warehouse, from the low slung dockyards to the crystalline monoliths of downtown NYC’s cultural character and rich history live in these shapes and forms. A critical matter of where you stand shapes the intimacy you share with the infrastructure.
